Pasadena's Amnesty International Group 22 11/22/2010
Last night I had the pleasure of meeting with members of Group 22 to talk about The Blessing Next to the Wound. And this gives me a chance to congratulate them for an honor I didn't know about last night: they were named the Local Group of the Year at Amnesty International'sWestern Regional Conference in San Francisco due to their extraordinary level of commitment and action. Besides their letterwriting campaigns on behalf of political prisoners, and public outreach, members meet once a month at Vromans Bookstore to discuss a book about human rights and Hector and I were honored to be the November selection. Unfortunately, last night, as we gathered at 6:30 PM, we learned Vromans was closing at 7:00 for a special event they had forgotten to notify anyone about. We adjourned to El Portal for Mexican food and more conversation. The group--especially Kathy Hansen-Adams--was also instrumental in getting Vromans to schedule an event for us on November 12 where a standing-room-only audience of about 50-60 people discovered we don't just talk about the ills of the world as Hector drummed, told a story, had people laughing and singing a song from Burkina Faso. November 11 we were at Village Books in Pacific Palisades, thanks to Ulis and Sandra Sunshine Williams. (Seen below thanks to the camera of Carol Gomez.) And I just haven't had a chance to post anything about it. There we enjoyed debate, wine, fuji apples, and baked goodies and as a nice surprise my cousins -- Richard Reynolds and Michele Anderson--joined us. Add Comment |
